In today’s world of technology, it can sometimes seem like we’re totally separated from the natural world. Sure, we’re still slaves to our biological functions and needs, and we even welcome animals into our homes, but things are a far cry from natural. Those animal companions have been domesticated to be almost unrecognizable when compared to their wild ancestors, and the things we eat are less and less resembling foods hunted and foraged in the wild. No, our modern world is as far removed as possible from nature, though, we will never be separate from it. That is, without the transhumanist movement, at least, and that still seems a long way off. However, it can still be a great idea to try to reconnect with our natural roots from time to time, lest we become more machine than man.

Ways to get back to nature are many, and it’s really all about your preferences, really, but some suggestions never hurt anybody. My favorite way to reconnect with Mother Nature is to go for a hike with my wife and our dog. This also doubles as a foraging adventure, so it’s a two for one special when it comes to getting back to our roots. However, if you get constant migraines like me, you’re to need some Ray Ban sunglasses to keep the pain to a minimum. Another way to get back to nature is to go for a camping trip. Camping is a tried and true, time honored pastime for many, and everything about is natural, with very few exceptions. Sitting around the campfire at night, roasting treats, telling ghost stories… This scene wouldn’t be at all out of place during the earliest years of our species, fighting for survival. There are many other options, of course, and these are just a couple favorites. Find your own way of connecting to nature and the history of our species for the best results.

How Yoga and Meditation Can Get You Your Heart’s Desire

The desire of the heart. The deep, internal one. That singular longing that sometimes nudges us awake in the middle of the night. Or that we find ourselves contemplating while gazing at a beautiful sunset. The desire that propels us to search for that perfect someone.

What is this desire? There may be many desires of the heart, but the most core desire is to achieve union with a beloved. To be so in tune with another individual, or grand experience, that we feel complete, in love, in oneness, safe and full.

So how do we achieve this? If you already practice yoga, check yourself the next time you sit deeply in meditation, or breathe into the zone in Natarajasana. In this state, if very still, we can begin to discover our heart’s desire. We begin to hear that quiet, small voice within, which actually is the voice of God.

The great yogic text, The Bhagavad-Gita, or The Song of God, lays a path for achieving this deep desire of the heart for a beloved through meditation and yoga.

“And of all yogis, the one with great faith who always abides in Me, thinks of Me within himself, and renders transcendental loving service to Me – he is the most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all. That is My opinion.” (The Bhagavad-gita As It Is, p. 6:47)”

Sometimes I call the state I am blessed with through practicing yogic meditation, “The Zone”. Have you ever been in “the zone”? Of course you have. Where mental trappings soften, where senses are heightened, and the light connecting us all abounds, pulsing throughout the living beings in your vicinity.

The zone can be an experience of God. Of loving God. Of being loved by God and all His children in their pure state. I found this through yoga and meditation. Practicing yoga poses with Hatha yoga brought me to yogic breathing, or pranayama, which brought me to dhyana, or focus, which led me to bhakti, which is loving devotion to the Supreme.

For what does one meditate upon? After stilling our bodies and minds through successful asana, do we seek to become nothing, or to merge into the white light of the Brahman effulgence?

The ultimate Vedic text of devotion, the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, states:

“If brahmananda, the bliss of merging in the Brahman effulgence, were multiplied one hundred trillion times, it would still not equal even an atomic fragment of the ocean of transcendental bliss felt in devotional service (1:1:38). (Goswami, mid 1500’s)”

Yoga is service. To maintain the gift of our bodies, to equilibrate our often restless minds, and to open the heart to begin the journey of union with the Supreme. Directing our devotion to a higher path, to a noble path, can lay down tracks that take you to a future brighter than we may be able to currently imagine.

I encourage you to walk the yoga path. My practice continues to fulfill my heart’s desire, ever deepening and gaining in nuanced richness, as I gain increasing access to the love residing in my heart for the Supreme and for all living beings.

To truly fulfill your heart’s desire, you may want to ask prayerfully in meditation, while relaxing in shavasana, at the foot of a waterfall, or wherever you feel safe, in a place that allows you to focus within. Ask to be shown the path to this love. If you listen very carefully you will hear that soft, soothing voice from within that is directing the wanderings of the living entities from time immemorial (A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, 1972, 18:61). Through this yoga practice, if sincere, you will be guided to fulfill your heart’s desire.

It’s a brand new year, so it’s time to take the bull by the horns, or the tiger by the tail, as the case may be, and roll up your silk sleeves to tackle that mess that you laughingly refer to as your apartment. But just like the ancient orientals told of the man who could eat an elephant by chewing on one piece at a time, you, too, can confront the elephant in the room, or in your apartment, by breaking it into bite size pieces and going to work on it. Here’s how:

Be your clutter

Before you touch a single solitary thing in your apartment, take the time to inventory all of your possessions and become one with them. That tennis racket in the hallway closet; what is it trying to tell you about your physical fitness and social skills? Is it full of cobwebs and coming unstrung, or is it well used and glowing with an inner light that symbolizes your success in love, life, and business? See it in your hand, then see it hung up on a special hook, like a trophy, in your living room. Now it becomes a symbol of your success, or of your goals. It’s no longer clutter; it’s a mantra! Treat all your material goods like that and soon they will each have a place of honor in your home — or you’ll fling them away in disgust as reminders of dark deeds and foul moods you no longer wish to indulge in.

Every item in your apartment, especially if you’re living at Fairbourne Station, from the biscotti warmer to the vial rack of essential oils, has a place specifically designed for it in the universe. Nothing is created that does not fit in somewhere. Your challenge is to find where your belongings fit, and then see to it that they are put there. Sometimes you may not know just where something belongs, such as your teakwood backscratcher. Don’t worry, if you just take the time to imagine that backscratcher floating in space and then being pulled down by the force of gravity, you will be guided to the exact spot where it was meant to be put — perhaps hanging in your shower stall or tucked under your eiderdown pillow. Never place a possession someplace where it clearly doesn’t belong — this leads to bad karma and upsets the entire chi of your household.

Be contained

Some items, like unicycles and kite string, belong out in the open. But many of your possessions are happiest when they are contained, locked up and out of sight. Such things include liquor bottles, stamp collections, utensils, flatware, and Hudson Bay 8 Point blankets. Every physical thing has an innate desire either to be on display or to be hid away. You must be able to interpret just which of your possessions needs a container in a dark closet or walnut paneled drawer, and which yearn to be free to roll around on your parquet floor or climb up a wall. Once you have that figured out your clutter is gone, and peace of mind enfolds you.

Go paperless immediately, if you haven’t done so already. Everything that’s important can be sent to the Cloud so that filing cabinets, folders, wall calendars, diaries, and notepads should disappear from your life like baby fat after liposuction.
