Author Spotlight: Dr. Abraham M. George and a Life Committed to Purposeful Service

From the Indian Army to global finance and humanitarian leadership, Dr. Abraham George exemplifies success guided by compassion and responsibility.

Dr. Abraham M. George is an author whose life defies easy categorization. Soldier, scholar, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, he has lived across cultures and professions, yet every chapter of his life reflects a growing commitment to service. As the author of “Mountains to Cross: Finding Life’s Purpose in Service,” Dr. George offers readers more than a personal memoir. He presents a lived philosophy that challenges conventional ideas of success and invites reflection on purpose, responsibility, and compassion.

Born in Kerala, India, Dr. George was raised in an environment that emphasized discipline, education, and integrity. These values guided his decision to join the Indian Army as a young man. He served as an artillery officer in the Himalayan region at the Se La mountain pass, one of the most challenging military postings in the world. During his service, Dr. George survived a near-fatal accident that would profoundly alter his perspective on life. Facing mortality at a young age instilled in him resilience and a deep sense that life, when spared, carries an obligation to be meaningful.

After completing his military service, Dr. George moved to the United States to pursue higher education. His academic journey was marked by rigor and determination. He earned two master’s degrees and a PhD in business from New York University, achievements that opened the door to a successful career in international finance and entrepreneurship. For nearly twenty-five years, he built and led a global consulting firm, advised multinational corporations, and taught international business. By conventional standards, he had reached the pinnacle of professional success.

Despite financial stability and professional recognition, Dr. George felt increasingly unsettled. As he later reflects in “Mountains to Cross,” he began to question the meaning of success when it existed solely for personal gain. This period of introspection marked a critical turning point in his life. Rather than continuing along a comfortable path, he chose to confront a deeper calling. He recognized that his skills, education, and resources carried a responsibility to address injustice and inequality.

In 1995, Dr. George returned to India with a renewed sense of purpose. Two years later, he founded Shanti Bhavan, a residential school that provides free, world-class education to children from India’s most marginalized communities. The school supports students from early childhood through college, offering not only academic excellence but also emotional care, mentorship, healthcare, and stability. Shanti Bhavan was designed as a long-term investment in human potential, not a short-term charitable solution.

Today, Shanti Bhavan is recognized globally as a model for education-driven social change. Its graduates work at leading organizations such as Google, Deloitte, and Goldman Sachs. Others have chosen careers in education, law, healthcare, and public service. Each graduate represents a family lifted out of generational poverty and a future reshaped through opportunity and empowerment.

Dr. George’s humanitarian impact extends beyond education. He played a key role in the nationwide elimination of leaded gasoline in India, a landmark public health achievement that continues to benefit millions. He has also supported rural healthcare initiatives and programs that strengthen independent journalism. Across every endeavor, Dr. George applies the same discipline, accountability, and ethical leadership that defined his career in business.

As an author, Dr. Abraham George writes with humility and clarity. He does not position himself as a hero or present his life as a template to follow. Instead, he offers his story as an invitation to reflect on what is possible when success is aligned with service. His voice resonates with professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, and readers who seek to transform achievement into meaningful impact.

Dr. George’s life reminds us that success does not lose value when it is shared. It gains purpose. Through his work and his writing, he continues to inspire individuals around the world to ask a vital question: How can my life and my success serve others?
